As we approach the year 2026, the problem is not religions; the problem is knowing how to be human…

Do you take pride in your appearance, your intellect, or the body you possess?I don’t think you should. Because none of these are values you created through your own effort and labor. All of them were gifted to you at birth; whether you call it the “Creator” or attribute it to genetics and science, they are entirely dependent on factors outside of yourself.

So, just as we do not boast because we were born with healthy limbs or a pleasant appearance, do we have the right to fanatically cling to a religion we were born into and look down on other beliefs and the customs of different faith groups?

I can hear voices shouting, “Of course not!” all the way to here.

Then what do you think is happening in the world today? What are certain individuals and beliefs doing?

I deliberately use the word “certain,” because the actions of some do not represent the whole. I want to believe—wholeheartedly—that level-headed, reasonable people still make up the majority in this world.

I know that I am apolitical and that I do not want to talk or write about politics. But sometimes such events appear on my innocent screen that this blunt, outspoken Sagittarius—myself—cannot remain silent and ends up speaking and writing.

How did I arrive at this topic? Recently, it was Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. In Istanbul, at the Neve Shalom Synagogue in Galata, innocent people—Jewish citizens with no involvement whatsoever in world events—were surrounded simply because they were Jewish, amid shouts of “We don’t want Zionists in our country.” They were prevented from entering the synagogue to pray.

I do not know what the final outcome was, but the images and the words spoken were horrifying.

Of course, those who displayed this behavior do not represent all of Turkey; they are a very small group. Unfortunately, fanatical, blinded, and ignorant people like this exist not only in Turkey, but also in Canada, England, France, and the tragedy that occurred at Bondi Beach in  Australia—in short, almost everywhere in the world.

And this is not limited to that alone. In many parts of the world, Christmas trees are being destroyed, Christmas celebrations are being targeted, decorations are being torn down, and people are being bullied, threatened, and silenced because of their beliefs. What is this hatred directed at a tree, a decoration, a holiday really about? Is it about faith—or about intolerance?

Dear humanity; my friends, my loved ones…

Regardless of what we believe, which religion or culture we are born into, or which belief we choose, it does not matter—let us first learn how to be human and choose to be human. Let us respect one another’s faith, lifestyle, and choices. Let us stop placing the consequences of state policies—over which we have no power to change—onto innocent people.

As we enter a new year, I say this:The moment we learn to respect one another’s beliefs and ways of life, that is when this world will become a more livable place.

Happy New Year…Stay with peace, love, and respect.
